Short description
Ciprian Ploștinar is an accelerator scientist and currently serves as Head of the Accelerator Division and Accelerator Project at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden. He leads the teams responsible for delivering one of the world’s most ambitious high-power linear accelerator projects, designed to provide 5 MW of proton beam power for neutron science. Before joining ESS in 2017, Ciprian spent more than a decade at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, working on the ISIS accelerator and its upgrades, as well as proton driver developments for a future Neutrino Factory. He holds a DPhil in accelerator physics from the University of Oxford, where his research focused on the design principles of high-power linear accelerators. He maintains close links with the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science and has contributed to international accelerator collaborations across Europe, Asia and North America. Beyond his scientific and engineering work, Ciprian is committed to widening access to education. He co-founded Oxford for Romania, an initiative supporting talented Romanian students from less privileged backgrounds through educational opportunities and an international alumni network.
